Devils Win Four Straight to Start Season

(Garnet Valley, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season, posting wins over Wilkes University and Widener on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils posted a 4-0 shutout against Wilkes and held off Widener 8-7.

The Red Devils started off the day with five straight hits to score three runs in the first inning against Wilkes. Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) tripled in one run and scored another while Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) highlighted the big start as well, with a double and a run scored. 


Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) reached on an error and came around to score off the bat of Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) for the Devils' final run.

Dolan had back-to-back hits to start off the day. Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) added a pair of hits as well.

Widener would rally with four runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Red Devils were able to shut the door for an 8-7 win remain unbeaten on the young season.

The Pride struck early, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Dickinson used back-to-back, two-out doubles from Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrerw's) and Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) tied the game in the top of the fourth.

Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./The McDonogh School) and Dolan led-off the fifth with singles to trigger a three-run inning capped by a two-run triple from Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Beard). Brown singled again in the sixth, stole second and scored on an RBI base-hit from Dolan to give the Devils a 5-1 advantage.

Widener added one in the fifth and used two doubles for another in the seventh after the Devils erupted with three more in the top half of the inning. Widener tried to claw back into the game with four runs, two unearned in the bottom of the ninth for the final of 8-7.

Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) earned the win with a five-inning effort, striking out four. Carter went 2-for-3 three with three RBIs while Brown finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored on the day.

The Red Devils improve to 4-0 on the season. They are scheduled to have their home opener on Tuesday, facing Messiah College at 3:00 pm at MacPhail Field.
