Devils Sweep Double-Header to Start Break

(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team had an early start to its spring break tour, opening up against Westfield State University at 9:00 am on Saturday morning. The Red Devils got off to a good start as well, posting a 9-3 win in the first game of a double-header. They came back to claim the second, 8-3.

The Owls jumped out in the first, however, scoring two runs in the top half of the inning. Kyle Murphy singled up the middle, scoring both for a 2-0 lead.

The Red Devils answered immediately, tying the game in the bottom of the first. Dickinson capitalized on a pair of Westfield miscues to push across two unearned runs. Senior Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) singled and classmate Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) tallied an RBI.

Sophomore Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) doubled to lead-off the second and advanced to third on a balk. He came in to put Dickinson on top, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit).

The Red Devils erupted for three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to stretch the lead to 9-2. Werner started things off with a single to start the fourth. Dickinson used some effective bunting and defensive errors to take a 6-2 advantage at the end of the fourth.

Primavera singled and stole second to open the fifth. He scored on a double from Werner before first-year Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) launched a two-run homer to close out the scoring for the Devils.

The Owls produced one run in the top of the seventh before Dickinson shut the door for the 9-3 decision.

Senior Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) earned the win on the mound, going four innings and recording six strikeouts. Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) came on to close as Dickinson improved to 6-2 on the season.

The Red Devils claimed the late morning nightcap, 8-3. Junior Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) led-off the third inning with a single and scored on an RBI double from Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) to put Dickinson on the board.

A lead-off triple and an error led to a pair of Westfield runs in the top of the third to put the Owls in front, 2-1.

The Red Devils answered in the top of the fourth, scoring two of their own to regain the lead, 3-2. Werner drew a lead-off walk and Thompson reached in a base-hit to right center. With two outs, first-year Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) drove a ball to left to drive in Werner while Thompson came across on an error.

Christian Morales was hit by a pitch and eventually came around to tie the game on a RBI single by Colin Dunn.

Werner led-off the sixth with another walk and Carter reached on a bunt base-hit, looking to move the runner. Band singled in one run and Brown tallied an RBI with a sacrifice fly to give the Devils a 5-3 advantage.

First-year Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) singled and scored on a two-run homer by Primavera. Hopkins tacked on the final run with a solo shot, just two batters later for the 8-3 win.

Thompson went 3-for-3 in game one while Werner went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Dolan came back with two hits in game two after seeing a remarkable 21-game hitting streak come to an end in the opener. Dolan was chasing the school record of 24, set by Billy Fisher in the 2000 season.

Band went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a runs scored. First-year Ben Rappaport (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) went five innings to earn the win before classmate Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) came on to claim a save, going two innings and recording a pair of strikeouts.

The Red Devils improve to 7-2 in the season. They face Trinity College in a double-header on Sunday with the first game starting at 2:00 pm.
