(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team split a double-header with Trinity College of Connecticut on Sunday, claiming the opener 11-2 before dropping a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
The Red Devils used four straight singles to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) added an RBI and a stolen base in the inning while Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) and Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) tallied RBI singles as well.
The Red Devils recorded seven hits in the inning with all nine hitters making contact. On the other side, Dickinson faced just 10 batters in the first three innings.
Sakowicz tripled in the third inning and came in to score as Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) reached on an error to stretch the lead to 5-0. The Devils had another big inning in the fourth, pushing across five more runs to lead 10-0.
Senior Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) led-off the inning with a double, stole third and scored on an RBI base-hit from Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill). Thompson swiped second base and scored on another RBI from Band. Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) drove in two runs and stole a base while Brown added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
A lead-off walk and back-to-back singles led to a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dolan reached for the fourth time to lead-off the fifth inning, scoring his third run of the game for the final of 11-2.
Dolan went 2-for-5, reaching on two errors. Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) went the distance for a complete game win, allowing just two runs and two walks while recording six strikeouts.
Sophomore left-hander McLane Hill tossed a one-hit complete game, striking out 10 as Trinity salvaged a split with a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
Sophomore Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) spoiled the no-hitter with a single in fifth inning. He came around to spoil the shutout as well with the Devils' lone run.
The Bantams tallied lone runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) turned in a solid performance on the mound, scattering six hits and a pair of walks while recording seven strikeouts.
The Red Devils stand at 8-3 on the season. They return on action on Monday afternoon, facing Richard Stockton College at 3:30 pm.
