(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team rebounded with a pair of wins on Friday to close out spring break with an overall record of 12-5. The Red Devils posted a 6-3 win over Fitchburg State in the opener and rallied for a 7-6 win in the bottom of the seventh of game two.
The Falcons used three singles in the first inning to put an early run on the board. Dickinson answered with an unearned run in the second as Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) singled and came in to score on an error off the bat of Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit).
The pair combined for another run in the fourth when Thompson singled and this time came around on a Hopkins double to put Dickinson on top, 2-1.
The Devils tacked on another run in the top of the fifth before Fitchburg countered to cut the lead to 3-2. Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) doubled in the seventh and came in to score the first of three runs as first-year Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) singled in the next at-bat.
Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) added a single and sophomore Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) came on to drive in two runs with a base-hit to stretch the lead to 6-2.
The Falcons tallied their third run with Brendan Cutler claiming his third RBI of the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
Sakowicz and Primavera each went 2-for-3 in the opener while Thompson recorded a pair of hits as well. Hopkins and Sumners each added two RBIs.
The nightcap turned out to be a thriller with the Red Devils scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game, 7-6, on a base-hit from Sumners.
Sakowicz scored in the first inning of game two, leading off with a single and scoring on an RBI knock from Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School). Fitchburg tied the game in the top of the second before a solo shot from Hopkins put Dickinson back on top, 2-1.
A lead-off double from Mike Martignetti and three straight hits led to a five-run inning for Fitchburg in the fifth, putting them in front, 6-2.
Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) led-off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun. Primavera doubled to score Thompson, cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Red Devils chipped away again in the sixth, capitalizing on a pair of Fitchburg errors to pull within one.
Primavera was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh and Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) reached on an error. Primavera scored on a passed ball to tie the game.
The Falcons worked a pair of strikeouts leave the Devils with just one out remaining. That's all they would need as Sakowicz tallied the walk-off RBI to give Dickinson the 7-6 victory.
Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) came on for two innings of the relief to earn the win.
The Red Devils improve to 12-5 on the season. They return north and are scheduled to host Elizabethtown College on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
