(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team turned in a truly amazing performance on Wednesday, scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overtake visiting Penn State Schuylkill, 5-4, in thrilling fashion.
The Lions capitalized on back-to-back singles and an error to score two runs in the fourth inning. Dan Doyle doubled to lead-off the fifth and came in to make the score 3-0, on an RBI single from Nick Jacoby.
Tyler Starry was hit by a pitch and made his way around to score, stretching the lead to 4-0, in the top half of the ninth inning.
Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) reached on an error with one out to start the Red Devil rally. Back-to-back singles from Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) loaded the bases.
Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) drew a walk to drive in the first run of the game for Dickinson. Another walk and a passed ball brought in two more to pull the Devils within a run.
Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, senior Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) came through in the clutch, driving a base-hit into right field to score two runs and lead the Red Devils to a 5-4 victory.
Werner went 3-for-5 on the day while Thompson came on to finish 2-for-2. The Red Devils had strong pitching performances on the hill from starter Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) through the first six innings.
Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) came in for the final three innings, recording five strikeouts to earn the win.
The Red Devils improve to 13-6 on the season. They travel to Lancaster Bible College for a 3:00 pm start on Friday.
