Woodard Books 10 as Devils Sweep Swarthmore

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team had two strong outings on Saturday, sweeping Swarthmore College to open Centennial Conference play. The Red Devils rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to overtake the Garnet for a 6-4 win in the opener. First-year Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) recorded 10 strikeouts to earn the win in a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.

A double and a homerun put Swarthmore on the board in the top of the first. They tacked on another in the second to lead 3-0.

The Red Devils used three straight hits to score a pair of runs in the third. Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) sandwiched a pair of singles around an RBI triple from Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy).

Thompson led-off the fifth inning with a triple and came in to tie the game on an RBI from Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's). The Garnet tallied one in the top of the sixth to pull back in front, 4-3.

Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) led-off the eighth with a single and Werner reached on a bunt base-hit as he looked to sacrifice. First-year Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) drove in a run and classmate Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./The McDonogh School) doubled to score to more and put Dickinson on top, 6-4.

Three straight ground outs would end the game with senior Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) picking up the win, coming on in relief for 3.1 innings. Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) recorded seven strikeouts, going 5.2 innings.

Woodard had a strong start in game two, facing just 11 batters in the first three innings. Three straight this and an error led to pair of runs in the second inning for the Red Devils. Two runs scored off the bat of Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) as he reached on an error.

Hopkins singled in the fourth and came in on another Garnet miscue to stretch the lead to 3-0. Dolan hit a two-out double in the seventh inning, followed by a base-hit from Thompson. They both came around to score on a single from Werner for the final for 5-0.

Woodard went eight innings, scattering five hits and surrendering no walks. Senior Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came on to close, facing four batters in the ninth.

Thompson went 3-for-4 in the opener and added another hit and run in game two. Dolan recorded a single, double and a triple on the day while Werner finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sakowicz went 3-for-4 in game two.

Swarthmore drops to 16-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Red Devils improve to 15-7 and start conference play 2-0. They travel to Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday for a 3:30 start in Baltimore.
