(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team closed out the season with a split at Washington College on Saturday afternoon. The Shoremen rallied to win the opener, 3-1, and the Red Devils claimed another close decision in the nightcap, 5-4.
The Red Devils struck first in game one as Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) led-off the third inning with a single and came in to score on an RBI rip from first-year Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South).
Washington pulled even in the fourth on a solo homerun from Brian Baquer. Back-to-back walks in the sixth inning set up a two-RBI double for Evan Hirschbaum that would give the hosts a 3-1 win.
Sakowicz went 2-for-4 while senior Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) added a pair of hits as well. Junior Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) turned in a solid performance on the mound, recording eight strikeouts in a 6.1 inning effort.
Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two on a three-run homer by Wes Robertson in the bottom of the first inning.
Back-to-back singles set the stage for an RBI double from senior Luke Besse (Marston Mills, Mass./Barnstable) to put Dickinson on the board in the top of the second. The Red Devils tied the game in the top of the third on RBI singles from first-year Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and senior Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy).
Doubles from Baquer and Robertson in the bottom half of the third put Washington back on top, 4-3. The Red Devils countered with a lone run in the sixth to knot the game once again. Dickinson capitalized on a pair of Shoremen errors as Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) scored off the bat of Sakowicz as the Devils scored without recording a hit in the inning.
Senior Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled in the eighth and made his way to third on a sacrifice bunt from Sakowicz and a ground out by Werner. Junior catcher Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) singled to center to score Dolan for the go ahead run.
The Red Devils held the Shoremen in their final two at-bats to earn the win, 5-4.
Primavera had a great final game, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Werner and Hopkins each tallied two hits and a runs scored while senior Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) went 2-for-5 in the nightcap.
Ian Brink (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock) went a solid six innings on the hill before senior Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) came on for the win, recording three strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh. Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) recorded two strikeouts to earn the save.
The Red Devils finish the season 20-18 overall and 7-11 in the Centennial Conference.
