Mules Hold Off Red Devils in CC Opener

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team had a great start and another strong outing on Saturday, but suffered a 25-6 setback to visiting Muhlenberg in the Centennial Conference and home opener at Biddle Field.

Injuries played a role as the Red Devils lost some key contributors throughout the game. Dickinson had a strong start, forcing a punt on Muhlenberg's opening possession. The Mules put together a scoring drive on the next possession, but failed on the extra-point to hold a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Senior Aturo Adkins (Canton, Mass./St. Sebastian's) recovered a fumble on the Muhlenberg 34 yard line, but the Devils were unable to move the football. The Mules gained possession on their own 24 but they had to settle for a 35-yard field-goal as the Devils trailed just 9-0 at halftime.

First-year quarterback Robert Geiss (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), who came on to replace junior starter Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) early in the game, led the Devils on a 12-play scoring drive to start the second half.

Sophomore running back Jeremy Walsh (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) moved the ball on the ground and Geiss connected with senior Kyle Donahue (Glenside, Pa./Germantown Academy) for a 13-yard pass to pull Dickinson within a field-goal, 9-6, after the extra point attempt failed.

The teams traded possessions before the Mules capitalized on good field position to score on a five-play, 29-yard drive. The Devils blocked the extra point and trailed by nine as they headed into the final quarter.

The Red Devils came up big on defense, forcing a pair of punts before a 26-yard field-goal gave Muhlenberg an 18-6 advantage. They added a late score on their last drive for the final of 25-9.

Junior Matt Butz (Monkton, Md./Hereford) and James Turner (Ridgefield, Conn./Suffield Academy) led the defensive effort, each with a game-high 11 tackles. First-year Taj DeFrance (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) added seven solo tackles on the day.

The Red Devil defense combined for five sacks, led by one each from Adkins and Thomas Nocka (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley).

Geiss completed 12-of-23 passes for 90 yards. Burger was 4-for-5 in the early going. Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) led the receivers with five catches while Jake Walbert (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) covered 26 yards on two receptions before leaving with an injury. Walsh ran for 94 yards on 31 carries.

Mark Riggio rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns while Matt Gibbon went 14-of-23 for 133 yards on the day. Jake Morra and Matt Musilli each had 10 tackles.

The Red Devils (0-2, 0-1 CC) are on the road next weekend, traveling to Gettysburg College for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
