Four Hit Double-Figures in Win Over Hopkins

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team made a great run down the stretch to claim a 69-64 road-win at Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday night.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-0 lead before sophomore guard Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) followed up a pair of Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) free throws with a three-pointer and a three-point play to put the Devils up, 8-6.

Dickinson kept the run going, stretching the lead to 20-10. Hopkins used three-pointers to cut the deficit to 22-21 before Hinckley answered with a triple at the 6:23 mark. First-year Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hills School) scored back-to-back buckets at the end of the half to put the Devils in front, 34-30.

Austin Vasiliadis hit a pair three-pointers, early in the second half to give the Blue Jays a 38-37 advantage. Sophomore Michael Jurzynski (Pearl River, N.Y./The Master's School) erased a two-point deficit with a dunk and a free throw, and Hinckley added two more from the stripe for a 50-47 lead, with 7:56 remaining.

Vasiliadis hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Hopkins in front, 58-54, and later converted a pair of free throws for a 60-56 lead with 3:44 to play.

Melton connected on two free throws, around a Michael Gardner jumper, and Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) buried a three-pointer to give the Devils the lead with just over a minute to play.

The Blue Jays countered and forced a turnover with just over 30 seconds remaining in the game. The Devils relied on the defense and chose not to foul, leading to an Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) steal.

Wright was fouled and converted both free throws to give Dickinson the lead. He pulled the rebound on the other end and stretched the margin to three with two more foul shots. Hopkins turned the ball over and Melton hit a pair for the final of 69-64.

Vasiliadis went 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, scoring a game-high 18 points as Hopkins falls to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.

Four Red Devils reached double-figures on the night, led by 12 points from Melton, hitting 9-of-12 free throws. He had eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocked shots. Hinckley added 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Wright went 6-for-8 from the line, scoring 11 points while making five steals and controlling four rebounds while Jurzynski tallied 10. Allen scored nine points and made four steals with Brown scoring eight points to go with three rebounds and two assists.

The Red Devils improve to 8-5 overall and keep pace in the conference with a 5-1 mark. They return home to face Ursinus College on Thursday night at 8:00 pm.
