Allen Nets 26 to Lead Devils Past Bullets 73-68

(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team held off a late charge to defeat Gettysburg College, 73-68, on Wednesday night.

The scoring went back-and-forth throughout the opening minutes with the Red Devils leading, 22-20, with 10:38 remaining in the first half. Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) had a great start, hitting a trio of three-pointers and a pair of free throws to lead the way.

The Red Devils started to gain some momentum behind strong play from senior Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day), pulling in front, 29-21.

The Bullets would answer, cutting the deficit to one, with four minutes to play in the half, 31-30. Dickinson stretched the back to four, 38-34, at the break.

Allen started the second half with another three-pointer and first-year Chas Battaglia (Sterling, Va./Langley) hit one to put the Devils up, 51-39, at the 15 minute mark.

The Red Devils remained in front, flirting with a double-digit advantage through most of the second half. The Bullets kept the game within reach and made a late run.

Luke Cooper completed a three-point play to pull the Bullets within one, 67-66, with just over four minutes to play. A pair of free throws put Gettysburg in front, but the Devils answered with a Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) lay-up on the other end, with two minutes remaining.

The Red Devils held on defense and Hinckley pulled down a big offensive rebound to give Dickinson a new shot clock with just over a minute to play.

The Devils were unable to convert but senior Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) came up with a huge steal, sending Allen to the line with 13 seconds on the clock.

Allen hit both and added two more with four seconds left for the final of 73-68.

Allen finished with a game-high 26 points on the night, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. He handed out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds, made four steals and hit four three-pointers.

Melton reached double-figures with 14 points, controlling eight rebounds. Hinckley added nine points, four rebounds and five assists while McNeal tallied nine points and dished out a pair of assists. Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) chipped in with six points and five rebounds.

Gettysburg slips to 2-5 and 1-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Red Devils return to action on December 18, traveling to Lebanon Valley College for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
