(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team survived a thriller in Chestertown on Saturday as Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) made a steal and fed senior Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) for a jumper at the buzzer to defeat Washington College, 72-70.
Senior Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) scored his 1,000th career point, recording a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Washington jumped out to an early advantage, pulling in front 13-3 to start the game. The Shoremen built the lead to 19-8 as the game approached the midpoint of the first half.
Sophomore Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to a field-goal, 19-17, with 8:38 to play in the half.
Washington put together another run to lead, 32-20, with just over three minutes remaining. Melton went to work inside and Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored to close out the half with the Devils trailing, 37-31.
The Shoremen had a double-digit lead as the game approached the midpoint of the second half. The Red Devils would rally once again, pulling within a field goal at the 8:57 mark, 53-51.
Romocki traded three-pointers and Hinckley hit a pair of free throws to pull Dickinson even with eight minutes on the clock. Romocki gave the Devils their first lead of the contest, 64-62, with 4:14 remaining.
Allen scored back-to-back to put the Devils up, 70-66, with just under two minutes to play. The Shoremen answered to tie and had possession with just five seconds on the clock, following a steal from Alec Lewis.
Hinckley would come up huge, stealing the ball back and finding McNeal for the game-winner as time expired.
Romocki led the Red Devils with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Melton hit 8-of-12 shots for his 17 points while Allen and Hinckley tallied 14 and 10, respectively. Allen grabbed six rebounds and handed out six assists, and Hinckley went 4-for-5 from the free throw line, dishing out four assists.
Sam Lorenzo (Sterling, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) tallied three points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. McNeal had four points, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
The Red Devils improve to 15-10 overall and 11-7 in the Centennial Conference. They are travel to Ursinus College for the first round of the conference playoffs on Tuesday night. Tip-off time will be announced on Monday.
