(Morristown, N.J.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team suffered a 82-72 setback to Washington & Lee University on Friday night in the first round of the Rose City Invitational.
Senior Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) scored back-to-back to put the Red Devils in front 10-5 before the Generals went on a run and pulled in front 25-15.
Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) knocked down a pair of three pointers and Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) hit a pair of free throws to keep the Generals in striking distance.
Late baskets from Hinckley and first-year Will Colleran (Wayne, Pa./Valley Forge Military Academy) cut the deficit to six at the break, 37-31.
Will Brueggeman hit a three-pointer and added a pair of free throws to put W&L up by 11 to start the second half.
A Hinckley three-pointer cut the margin back to eight, but the Generals would answer to lead 53-36 with 14 minutes remaining.
The Red Devils rallied from a 21-point deficit to cut the margin to 11 at the 10-minute mark as Hinckley capped the run by sandwiching four free throws around a three-pointer from Wright.
The Generals tried to pull away, but Dickinson kept the pressure on until the final buzzer.
Hinckley finished with 20 points, going 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Wright finished with 21 points while Allen had 11 points with a trio of three-pointers on the night.
The Red Devils slip to 0-2 on the season. They return to action tomorrow afternoon, facing Wheaton College (Mass.) at 2:00 pm.
