(Owings Mills, Md.) – The #11-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team traveled to Stevenson University for the 2017 Mustang Classic on Friday afternoon to face #17-ranked ranked Denison University in the opening game of the tournament.
The Big Red pulled in front in the second quarter and continued to build on the lead throughout the second half en route to an 11-3 win.
The teams traded goals in a span of under a minute as Denison took a brief 1-0 lead on a goal by Josh Happ at the 10:07 mark. The Red Devils claimed the ensuing face-off and sophomore Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) slipped one past the goaltender with 9:12 remaining to even the score, 1-1.
Brother Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) finished an assist from senior classmate Mike Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) to give the Red Devils a 2-1 advantage, with 3:25 to play in the first quarter.
Liam Rooney found the net with just 17 seconds remaining in the first to pull Denison even at 2-2. The Big Red controlled play for much of the second quarter, going on a 3-0 run to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Jake Waxter and Owen Armstrong wasted little time putting the Big Red in front, scoring at the 13:42 mark and at 13:16 to double-up the Devils, 4-2. Looney tallied an assist, feeding Peter Pittroff with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
The Big Red forced a turnover and launched the ball into the attack as time was running out. Denison collected the loose ball and Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) came up with another huge save at the buzzer to end the first half, keeping the deficit 5-2 at the break with his fifth stop of the quarter.
The Big Red won the opening face-off of the second half and immediately capitalized as Looney fed Spencer Butler at the 12:29 mark to extend the margin to 6-2. Looney would strike again to put Denison up 7-2 and the end of the third period.
Denison took advantage of an extra-man opportunity to start the fourth with Looney feeding Waxter to make the score, 8-2.
The Red Devils countered on the face-off as Dane Huber (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) beat the goalkeeper, just eight seconds later.
Denison regrouped, scoring three straight goals in just over a one-minute span to extend their lead to 11-3. Waxter closed out the game with a goal and an assist to finish with a hat-trick.
Stephen Paras finished with eight saves as Denison improves to 4-1 on the season. The Red Devils suffer their first loss of the season to move to 4-1 as well.
Jones finished with 10 saves while senior Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) anchored the defense with three ground balls. Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) and Zach Blumenstein (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) each picked up three GBs in the midfield as well.
The Red Devils will have another big test on Saturday, facing #2-ranked RIT in the second round of the Mustang Classic at 3:00 pm.
