#8 Red Devils Down Denison in Top 10 Showdown

(Owings Mills, Md.) – The #8-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team opened up a lead on #10-Denison University in the second quarter and held off the Big Red 14-9 at the Green Turtle Classic, hosted by Stevenson University.

Senior Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) put the Red Devils on the board, just 28 second into the contest. The teams played to a 3-3 tie as Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) scooped up his own face-off and found the net and Max Menkes (Potomac, Md./Bullis) finished an assist from Tucker Booth (Timonium, Md./Boy's Latin).

The Red Devils struck in the opening minute of the second quarter as Booth found senior John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) at the 14:23 mark. Dickinson tallied four straight goals to pull in front 7-3 at the midpoint of the half.

The Big Red broke up the run before the Phillips scored and then fed Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Berkshire) for an extra-man goal to put Dickinson up, 9-4, at the break.

The Big Red closed the gap in the third quarter, but only by a goal, outscoring the Devils 3-2 in the period. Menkes fed long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and then finished an assist from Phillips to make the score, 11-7.

Phillips added another goal to start the fourth and the teams traded goals to the final of 14-9. Lockwood capitalized on a man-up opportunity and Hartwick tallied an assist, finding Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) for his second of the game.

Hartwick won 6-of-7 face-offs in the first quarter and controlled 4-of-6 in the fourth. He claimed 16-of-26 on the day, adding eight ground balls to his goal and assist.

Usich forced four tunovers and picked up six GBs while Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School) controlled four GBs.

Phillips led the attack with three goals and three assists while Lockwood added a hat-trick and picked up six GBs.

In the nets junior Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 13 saves on the day.

The Red Devils improve to 5-1 on the season. They are back in action tomorrow, facing Middlebury College at 11:30 am.
