(Baltimore, Md.) – Junior Shepherd Waldenberger (Madison, Va./Madison County) scored once and dished out an assist to lead the Dickinson College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Johns Hopkins. The loss is the first in Centennial Conference play for the Blue Jays as they slip to 6-4-3 overall and 4-1-1.
The Red Devils improve to 7-4-3 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play. The first half saw a lot of chances but no goals for either team as they combined for 13 shots. The Devils struck in the 54th minute after a foul in the area led to a penalty kick. Sophomore Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) converted the try to put the Devils on the board, 1-0.
Waldenberger made a beautiful cross to sophomore Jamie Martin (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), directly in front of the Hopkins net. Martin placed the ball in the back of the goal to give the Devils a little insurance with 6:36 remaining in regulation.
Waldenberger would add more insurance, dodging his way into the area and beating the defense for the Devils' third tally of the day with just 1:15 on the clock.
Junior goaltender Cody Hickok (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) made five saves and received strong play from his defense to post the Devils' sixth shutout of the year.
Nick Cerrone made a pair of saves for Hopkins. The Blue Jays held the advantage in shots, 16-9, and forced six corners while allowing just one, defensively.
The Red Devils return home to host Ursinus College next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
