Men's Tennis Splits Monday Matches in Orlando

(Orlando, Fla.) – The Dickinson men's tennis team suffered heartbreaker in the morning, falling to Ithaca College, 5-4, to open spring break competition. They regrouped for a 7-2 win over Hampden-Sydney on Monday evening.

The Red Devils had a strong start against Ithaca, going 2-1 in doubles. The Red Devils dropped the top spot but claimed a pair of solid wins in the second and third flights.

First-years Sam Coan (Washington, D.C./Bullis) and Leonid Sorkin (St. Petersburg, Russia/University of Nebraska H.S.) held on for an 8-6 win at number two while Joey Bolanos (San Salvador, El Salvador/Escuela Americans) and Andrew Lai (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater) survived in the third (8-7, 9-7).

Coan and Bolanos claimed the points in singles, winning the third and fourth flights. Coan held off Colten Lavery in the first set (7-6) and finished strong, taking the second 6-1.

Bolanos battled to three-set victory, going (7-6, 3-6, 10-6) in the four-spot.

Hampden-Sydney earned a point in the top doubles flight, but the Red Devils would take a 2-1 lead with points at two and three.

The Red Devils claimed the top five singles flights to secure the 7-2 victory. Sorkin overcame a tough first set to win the top flight (4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9)).

Justin Pace (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) won the point at number-two in straight sets while Bolanos went (6-2, 6-1) to win the fourth. Coan and survived a three-set battle in the third and Derek Chen (Cranbury Township, Pa./Shady Side Academy) held on at number five (6-3, 7-6 (10-7).

Dickinson moves to 1-4 on the season. They will face St. Ambrose on Tuesday and join the women's team for double-headers with Division II Bloomsburg University and Morningside College (NAIA) on Wednesday.
