(Tucson, Ariz.) – The Dickinson softball team had a great start to its spring break trip, posting a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils opened with a 12-2 win over Macalester and closed out the day with a 6-4 victory against the University of Dubuque.
Macalester manufactured a run in the top of first, using a single, sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. The Red Devils answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning behind four singles and a pair of walks.
Macalester added a run in the third but Dickinson would counter with another six-run output in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Devils started the inning with three straight singles before Clayton reached on an error, driving in her third of the game.
Junior Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) earned the win in the circle, recording five strikeouts in a five-hit effort.
Clayton added two runs as Dickinson had seven players tally RBIs in the opener. Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a runs scored while Lema added another RBI, reaching on an error in the fourth as well.
The Red Devils recorded three straight singles to start game two. Senior Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison) led things off and came in to score as Clayton tallied her third RBI of the day.
Epstein singled again in the second, setting up an RBI opportunity for Alicia Lane (Sterling, Mass./Nashoba Regional) as first-year Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored after reaching on a walk.
Dubuque capitalized on an error in the second and used a double in the third to tie the game, 2-2. Lema drew a pinch-hit walk in the fourth inning and put Dickinson back on top, scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Epstein.
Walks and errors helped the Devils tack on a pair of runs in the fifth, stretching the lead to 5-2. Dubuque used doubles from Morgan Turnmire and Brandy Heraty to cut the deficit to 5-4, in the bottom of the sixth.
Clayton reached on an error and gave Dickinson an insurance run with a sacrifice fly from first-year Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) for the final of 6-4.
Epstein went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the nightcap. Lane added a pair of hits and Clayton scored twice to lead the offensive. Kueny picked up the win in the circle and first-year Kat Vill (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) came on to close to earn the save.
The Red Devils improve to 2-1 on the season. They return to action on Monday with games against the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Augsburg University.
