(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team had a heartbreaking afternoon, dropping a pair of close games to visiting Washington College on Saturday. A big fourth inning carried the Shorewomen to a 5-2 win in the opener and they held on for a 3-2 decision in the nightcap.
The Red Devils put two runs on the board in the third inning. Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./Penn Charter) led off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) singled and made her way to third, also coming in on a wild pitch to a 2-0 lead.
Elaina DiPrimio doubled and scored on a single from Maddie Bennett to make the score 2-1 in the fourth. The Shorewomen had a big inning in the sixth as Rachel Butler cleared the bases with a double and scored on a single from Grace Moery for the final of 5-2.
Gutpelet went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while Epstein added two hits as well. Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) did all she could in the circle, recording 12 strikeouts in the loss.
Bennett tallied another RBI as Washington scored two in the top of the first inning of game two.
The Red Devils used four hits in the fifth inning to tie the game, 2-2. Parise hit a single to right field to score Gutpelet and Kat Vill (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) to pull the Devils even.
Washington would escape with the sweep, plating a run the sixth on a Bennett double for a 3-2 win.
Gutpelet added two hits in game two to lead the Red Devils.
Dickinson slips to 13-13 overall and 2-6 in the Centennial Conference. They were scheduled to host Haverford College on Sunday but that double-header has been postponed. They will host Muhlenberg College on Tuesday night at 5:00 pm.
