Strong First Half Stops Swarthmore 69-58

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team used a strong first half and held off a late run by visiting Swarthmore to post a 69-58 win at the Kline Center on Saturday.

The Red Devils opened the game with a 13-5 run and held a 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) scored the first two baskets for the Red Devils and sandwiched four free throws around another score to close out the period.

Lesher continued to control the paint in the second quarter while first-year Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) hit a three-pointer to put Dickinson up, 27-10.

Senior Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) hit back-to-back jumpers to help the Devils build a 38-15 advantage at halftime.

After the break, Dickinson continued to work the ball inside to Lesher and Donahue, building the lead to as many as 22, early in the third quarter. The Devils led, 54-38, as the teams headed into the fourth period.

Swarthmore looked to rally in the fourth, but could only cut the deficit to as close as 10, with just over four minutes to play. The Red Devils would finished strong for the final of 69-58.

Lesher had a huge afternoon, scoring a game-high 25 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots from the field and 13-of-17 from the foul line, adding a pair of blocked shots. Donahue tallied eight points and five rebounds while first-year Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) came on to add nine points and three rebounds.

Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) tallied six points, six rebounds, two assists, a steals and a block, and Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) returned to the line-up, adding six points, two rebounds and three steals.

The Red Devils improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They are on the road next Wednesday, traveling to Gettysburg College for a 6:00 pm tip-off.
