(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team came up short in a hard-fought match-up at Ursinus College on Saturday. The Bears put together a later run and were solid at the free throw line to claim a 66-54 win.
The Red Devils held a slim three-point lead after a back-and-forth first half as first-year Kate Deutsch (Marlboro, N.J./Camden Catholic) reached double-figures with 10 points at the break.
The Bears took an early lead, but the Devils answered and tied the game on a three-pointer from first-year Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) at the five-minute mark.
Junior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) hit a three-pointer late in the half to give the Red Devils a 32-29 lead.
The Bears came out and went on a 10-0 run to start the second half. Padalino finished a three-point play to break up the run, with 5:20 on the clock. Deutsch hit a pair of free throws and Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) knocked down a three-pointer to keep the Bears close at the end of the third, 45-40.
First-year Briana Breski (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) started the fourth with a three-pointer before Ursinus made a run to stretch the margin to 52-43. She hit another and Padalino hit a three, but Ursinus was able to answer to keep a nine-point lead.
Deutsch made a great move inside to cut the deficit to just seven with under two minutes to play. The Red Devils kept battling, but the Bears would close out the game at the line, 66-54.
Padalino led the Red Devils with 15 points and four rebounds while Deutsch finished with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Kremp added a late three-pointer to finish match Breski with six points. Breski added three rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. First-year Katie Weaver (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) led the Devils with seven rebounds, adding five points, two assists, a block and a steal.
Heiring tallied five points and Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) had five rebounds and two assists.
The Red Devils slip to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road again on Wednesday, traveling to Franklin & Marshall for a 7:00 tip-off.
