(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team pulled away from host Muhlenberg College in the third quarter and led by double-figures until a late three-pointer to claim a key Centennial Conference win, 62-53.
The Red Devils had a good start on the road, holding the Mules to 1-for-11 shooting in the opening minutes. Dickinson used three-pointers from Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) and Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) and strong play inside by Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) to take a 10-5 lead.
The Mules closed out the quarter with back-to-back scores with Dickinson holding a 10-9 advantage. The hosts capitalized with a pair of three-pointers to start the second, jumping in front 15-10.
The Mules held the lead until a three-pointer from Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) put Dickinson back on top, 19-18, at the four-minute mark.
Senior Jonica Brown (Mohnton, Pa./The Hill School) dished a nice assist to Deutsch and first-year Hannah Peck (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart) knocked down a three on nice find by Deutsch on the next possession to put the Red Devils up, 25-20, at halftime.
Deutsch matched Muhlenberg's Ny Thomas with 11 points through the first two quarters.
Kremp caught fire to put the Red Devils up, 36-24, hitting a trio of three-pointers to start the third.
Deutsch dropped in a nice finger roll and Brown found Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) wide open for another three-pointer to stretch the margin to 43-27, with just over two minutes to play in the period.
Katie Weaver (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) added a long two from the corner as Dickinson went into the final break with a 45-30 lead.
Muhlenberg chipped away at the lead, pulling within 10 before Maira buried a three on a kick-out from Padalino to make the score, 50-37. Padalino added a three-pointer and Deutsch made a great move for a three-point play, stretching the margin to 56-40, with just over three minutes remaining.
Dickinson closed out strong with the help of a late steal and layup from Weaver and a final free throw from Maira. The Mules hit a late three-pointer for the final of 62-53.
Deutsch connected on 7-of-10 shots from the field for a game-high 21 points, adding eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots. Kremp finished with 14 points behind four three-pointers.
Maira went 2-for-3 from long range for nine points, adding six rebounds and four assists. Padalino tallied eight points on two triples while controlling seven rebounds. Weaver handed out five assists to go with four points.
Muhlenberg slips to 13-7 overall and 9-6 in the conference. The Red Devils improve to 10-11 and 7-9 in the CC. They return home to face Franklin & Marshall on Thursday with tip-off set for 7:30 pm.
