Last Second Goal Keeps Red Devils Unbeaten at 4-0
(Grantham, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 on the season with a thrilling, 12-11 win, at Messiah College on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore captain Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) finished an assist from classmate Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) with just two seconds remaining, to lead the Red Devils to their fourth straight win.
Sophomore Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) turned in an outstanding performance, scoring four goals and handing out an assist. Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) controlled a game-high six draws, adding three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Messiah struck first, scoring just 44 seconds into the contest. The Red Devils wasted little time answering as Iverson netted a pair of goals in a span of just 27 seconds, with assists from Clancy and junior Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart).
Iverson returned the favor, dishing out an assist to Clancy, putting Dickinson in front, 3-1, with 19:18 remaining in the half. Messiah tallied back-to-back goals to pull even at the 15:11 mark.
The Red Devils went on a run, stringing together five goals to stretch the lead to 8-3, with 5:44 to play in the half. Haglund triggered the run, converting a free position before finishing the first of three straight assists by Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane).
Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) and Catie Ledwick (Weston, Conn./Weston) were on the receiving end of Stern's assist, and Mara Cassidy (Sivler Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) put a free position attempt in the net for the Devils' eighth goal of the game.
Carly Bajus stopped the run with her second goal of the day before O'Brien answered with just 23 seconds to play in the half, to make the score 9-4, at the break.
Messiah came out on fire to open the second half, scoring in the first minute once again, and scoring five straight to pull even, 9-9, with 14:55 remaining in regulation.
Iverson scored her third goal of the day to put Dickinson back on top, 10-9, with an assist from O'Brien at the 13:19 mark. Claire Strikeleather pulled the Falcons even again, just over a minute later.
O'Brien found Iverson once again, with 9:09 left in the game. Messiah would answer one more time as Brooke Gamble finished an assist from Madi Brunk, with 4:22 left to play.
Messiah won the ensuing draw, but Mahony came up big, causing a turnover and controlling the ground ball to give the Red Devils possession. Following a timeout with 15 seconds on the clock, Morrissey fed Clancy for the game-winner with just two seconds remaining, keeping Dickinson unbeaten on the season.
Iverson led the way with the four goals and one assist. Clancy finished with a pair of goals, an assist, two caused turnovers and two GBs. O'Brien tallied two goals and two assists, Haglund went 2-1 and Stern chipped in with a trio of assists as well.
Carly Bajus led Messiah (1-2) with three goals and one assist. Sarah Dolan made two saves while Liz Keeney controlled five draws.
The Red Devils (4-0) head to Florida for spring break. They are scheduled to face Skidmore College on Monday afternoon, and Stevenson University on Thursday morning.
