Stern Nets Late Goal to Lift Devils Past Washington 13-12
(Carlisle, Pa.) – Sophomore Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) scored with just 20 seconds remaining to lift the Dickinson women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-12 win over visiting Washington College on Saturday.
The Shorewomen struck first as Emily Hubley found the net, just 36 seconds in to the contest. The Red Devils answered with three straight goals. Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) put the Devils on the board at the 28:51 mark, scoring unassisted.
First-year Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tallied the first of three free position goals, and Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) finished an assist from Mara Cassidy (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) at the 23:46 mark.
Hubley stopped the run and Cara Pascarella tied the game with 20:24 to play in the first half. Siebold countered with another free position before the Shorewomen went on a 5-0 run to lead, 8-4, with 3:13 remaining in the half.
Hubley found the net three times while Caroline Lovett scored twice and handed out an assist. Siebold closed out the half with her third free position, cutting the deficit to, 8-5, at the break.
Sophomore Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) struck twice in the opening two minutes of the second half, scoring off assists from Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) and Stern.
O'Brien pulled the Devils even, scoring at the 24:45 mark. Pascarella and Lovett each struck again before Morrissey fed O'Brien to cut the lead to 10-9.
A pair of free position goals put Washington up, 12-9, with just under 14 minutes to play in the game. Haglund converted a free position to trigger another run for the Red Devils.
First-year Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) and O'Brien scored, just over a minute apart, knotting the game at 12-12, with 9:03 remaining in regulation.
The game went scoreless from that point, until O'Brien connected with Stern for the final dagger, with just 20 seconds on the clock. The Red Devils controlled the draw and were able to run out the clock to secure the win.
Hubley led Washington (7-4, 3-2) with six goals on the afternoon. Allison Remenapp made 14 saves in the nets.
O'Brien led the Devils with four goals and one assist while Siebold finished with a hat-trick as well. Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) controlled a game-high eight draws, adding five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
First-year Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) earned the start in the cage, making 12 saves to earn her first collegiate win in goal.
The Red Devils improve to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to McDaniel College on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm match-up with the Green Terror.
