O'Brien Nets Seven to Lead Devils Past Swarthmore
(Carlisle, Pa.) – Junior Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) scored seven goals and handed out two assists to lead the Dickinson women's lacrosse team past Swarthmore College, 19-10, on Saturday afternoon.
O'Brien gave the Red Devil seniors a game to remember for their final home contest, posting a key Centennial Conference win.
The teams traded goals in the early minutes before Swarthmore went on a 3-0 run, to lead 5-3, with 17:17 remaining in the first half. The Red Devils answered with a 6-0 clip of their own, led by three tallied from O'Brien to give her four goals, with 5:52 to play in the first half.
O'Brien struck again after Caroline Murphy scored for the Garnet to break up the Red Devil run. That put Dickinson up, 10-6, as the teams headed into halftime.
Swarthmore sandwiched a pair of goals around another strike from O'Brien to pull within 12-8, at the 24:53 mark. O'Brien took on a different role, assisting Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) on a pair of goals while Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) finished an assist from Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) to put the Devils in control, 15-8.
Corrine Sommi found the net for Swarthmore before O'Brien drove the crease for her seventh goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) scored off an assist from Haglund, and returned the favor, assisting Haglund, less than a minute later, for an 18-9 advantage, with 8:27 to play.
Emma Sipperly capitalized on a fast break before Clancy closed out the scoring with a free position goal for the final of 19-10.
O'Brien finished with seven goals and two assists. Iverson tallied four goals on the day while Clancy recorded a hat-trick as well. Haglund dished out three assists to go with her goal, and Morrissey tallied two goals and two assists.
Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) caused a pair of turnovers and picked-up four ground balls. Colleen Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) and Molli Haimerl (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also played well, joining senior Rae Buhosky (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) for a solid effort on the defensive end.
Lizzie Kolln led Swarthmore (7-7, 2-5 CC) with three goals. Michelle Ammerman and Connie Bowen each made three saves in the nets for the Garnet.
The Red Devils improve to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils are home again on Wednesday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 4:00 pm.
