Mules Escape Overtime Thriller 13-11

 

 

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team went from an extreme high to a big low, falling in an overtime thriller to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The Red Devils rallied as sophomore Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) scored on a free position shot with no time remaining to force overtime.

 

The Red Devils erased a 9-5 deficit in the second, led by four-goal half from Clancy. The sophomore captain put the Devils on the board, finding Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School), just 50 seconds into the game.

 

First-year Talene Bush (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) put Dickinson up 2-0 before the Mules went on a 4-0 run, led by two goals from Stephanie Umbach.

 

Sophomore Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) cut the deficit to 4-3 at halftime, scoring unassisted with 4:39 remaining in the half.

 

Junior Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) traded goals with Casey Armstrong in the opening minute of the second half. Muhlenberg strung together three straight goals to lead, 8-4. Catie Ledwick (Weston, Conn./Weston) broke up the run but Michelle Certosimo scored to put the Mules in front, 9-5, with 11:43 to play in the game.

 

Clancy scored off a Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) and scored unassisted, just 30 seconds later. Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) found twine off an assist from O'Brien, 33 seconds later, to pull Dickinson within a goal, 9-8.

 

Umbach struck again and Armstrong fed Kelsey Nagle for an 11-8 advantage with 4:50 on the clock. Mara Cassidy (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) finished an assist from Stern with 4:26 remaining.

 

Clancy made things interesting with a goal at the 1:15 mark, cutting the Mule lead to 11-10. The Red Devils forced a turnover and had one final chance to pull even. They capitalized on a late foul, putting Clancy on the arc with a second on the clock.

 

She ripped a shot into the net as time expired, forcing overtime. Kiersten Mulvey made a brilliant save in the final seconds for Muhlenberg.

 

Nagle and Umbach each struck in the overtime as Muhlenberg claimed a key conference match-up, improving to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the Centennial Conference.

 

Clancy finished with four goals and one assist on the day. Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) controlled five draws and caused a pair of turnovers.

 

Molli Haimerl (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) picked-up four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Colleen Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) controlled three GBs and came up with a big draw late in the game.  

 

Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) made nine saves in the first half, causing three turnovers and controlling two GBs. JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis) made seven saves over the final 36 minutes.

 

The Red Devils slip to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the conference. They travel to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday for a 12:00 pm start.
