(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team had a strong start and played some outstanding defense on Wednesday but #2-ranked Gettysburg would find some offense for a 13-5 decision.
The Red Devil defense played outstanding in the early going, keeping the Bullets off the board for the opening seven minutes.
Courtney Patterson tallied back-to-back goals to put Gettysburg in front 2-0 before first-year Erika Bloes (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) finished an assist from Anne Dunster (Cos Cobb, Conn./Greenwich) with just under 20 minutes to play in the half.
First-year Mack Maurer (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) served up back-to-back assists to Dunster in a span of under 30 seconds to pull the Red Devils within a goal, 5-4, at the 13:17 mark.
Maggie McLain tallied a goal and an assist as Gettysburg finished the half with a 3-0 run to lead 8-4 at the break.
Junior Sam Marmo (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) finished a feed from Maurer to open the second and cut the deficit to 8-5.
The Bullets would slow down the pace of the game and worked the clock with some strong offensive possessions in the second half. Dickinson continued to battle and made some strong defensive stands, holding Gettysburg to just three goals in the final 14 minutes for the final of 13-5.
Maurer handed out three assists and controlled a pair of draws while Dunster finished with two goals and one assist to lead the attack. First-year Greta Holt (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) turned in a solid game in the midfield while Laurie Travaglini (Darien, Conn./Darien) forced a pair of turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Avery Priest (San Rafael, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) made eight saves on the day.
The #2-ranked Bullets improve to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 6-7 and 3-3 in the conference. Dickinson is home again on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 12:00 pm.
