(Cambridge, Mass.) – The #17-ranked Dickinson women's squash team opened play at the 2018 College Squash Association Team Championships on Friday morning at Harvard University. The Red Devils earned the top seed in the Walker Cup (3rd Division) draw, featuring teams ranked 17th-24th.
Dickinson faced #24-ranked Colby College in the first round on Friday morning, advancing in the winner's bracket with a 6-3 victory.
Sophomore Abbie Wingerd (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) gave the Red Devils an early lead, winning her flight (11-1, 11-4, 11-2).
Senior Stuart Lemay (Harwich Port, Mass./Westover School, Conn.) battled to a hard fought win the sixth flight, posting a (6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 12-10) decision while Eloise Nimoityn (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Julianna Song in five sets (9-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-7) to claim the number three flight.
Sophomore Jaime Leigh Edghill (Diego Martin, Trinidad & Tobago/Holy Name) and first-year Carley Barton (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite) put Dickinson up, 5-0, winning the seven and eight spots in straight sets. Edghill clinched the match, going (11-4, 11-9, 11-5).
Junior Domenica Romo (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Atenas) rallied from a 0-2 start to win the second flight in a thrilling match, 3-2 (2-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8).
Colby put points on the board in the fourth and fifth flights, and Hedvika Suchankova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/St. Michael's) traded sets in the top flight before suffering a 3-2 setback (11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-4).
The Red Devils improve to 9-8 on the season. They will face #21 Wesleyan University on Saturday morning at 11:15 am. Wesleyan advanced to the winners' bracket, slipping past Franklin & Marshall, 5-4.
