(Lenexa, Kan.) – With outstanding support from Red Devil Nation and the Dickinson Football Parent Club, Dickinson College has claimed the Helmet Bowl II National Championship, announced on Monday afternoon. Sponsored by Helmettracker.com, Helmet Bowl grew dramatically in its second year, eclipsing the total number of voters before the semifinal round.
The Helmet Bowl is based purely on free, daily fan voting. The Red Devils were the top vote-producing program in the country, covering all NCAA divisions. Starting with almost 800 helmets from every college, conference and division, the Red Devils captured the Centennial Conference title and earned the top-seed in the East Region, advancing to the final 64-team field.
"Our Helmet Bowl Championship victory reflects the competitive mentality of Dickinson Football and our entire athletic department," expressed Assistant Athletic Director Christian Payne. "Our goal is to win in all we do, and this competition was an incredible avenue for Red Devil Nation to rally together and support our student-athletes."
Dickinson squared-off with the Tulsa Hurricane in the final showdown and continued to receive great support to earn the title of Helmet Bowl II National Champion. For the second straight year, a Division III school from the east came away with the title. Gallaudet University rallied win the inaugural competition last season.
"Dickinson has many generations of dedicated people who love our football program, and support all of our teams," Payne noted. "Specifically, our Dickinson Football Parent Club network stepped up and led a charge for us in spreading awareness, by using social media and word-of-mouth marketing to get Dickinson's helmet and competitive message sent across the nation."
The Red Devils rolled through the entire bracket and overcame a strong challenge from neighboring Lafayette College in the quarterfinals before ousting the Maine Black Bears, the top seed in the north region, in the semifinal match-up.
"Congratulations to all of our football student-athlettes, Coach Fordyce, and the entire football coaching staff on this recognition," Payne said. "A tremendous thank you goes to all of Red Devil Nation – all of you are a proud part of Dickinson's Helmet Bowl National Championship."
