(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team capitalized on a penalty stroke in the fourth quarter to rally past visiting Haverford College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Haverford took an early lead, scoring just 3:07 into the match as Kelsey Chai finished an assist from Rylee Fennell to put the 'Fords on the board.
First-year Macara Desai (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tied the game with less than a minute to play in the opening quarter, scoring off a rebound after a Red Devil corner with just 26 seconds on the clock.
The Red Devils would tally the game-winner with seven minutes remaining after a fast break led to a penalty stroke. Sophomore Hannah Spiri (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) found the upper corner of the cage to put Dickinson in front, 2-1.
Haverford would look to net the equalizer, but the Red Devil defense was solid in front of some outstanding play from senior goalkeeper Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Meeder turned away a flurry of shots following a penalty corner and kicked away a pair of hard shots to keep hold on to the lead.
The Red Devils held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners while Haverford outshot the hosts 11-7.
Meeder tallied seven saves on the afternoon as Dickinson improved to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Wednesday, hosting McDaniel College at 3:30 pm.
