Red Devils Snap Streak, Top #14 CNU 64-54

(Newport News, Va.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team snapped unbeaten Christopher Newport's 26-game home winning streak on Sunday afternoon, topping the #14-ranked Captains, 64-54.

A strong start defensively for both teams led to the Red Devils holding just a 10-7 lead, with under 13 minutes remaining in the half.

Senior Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored the first four points for Dickinson with Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) leading the way as well.

Points continued to be hard to come by as Melton knocked down a lay-up and a free throw to put Dickinson up, 15-12, with eight minutes remaining in the half.

A steal and short jumper from Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) forced the second timeout of the game for Christopher Newport. The Red Devils built a 10 point advantage with the help of a three-pointer from first-year Ryan Devine (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt).

The Captains made a run but the Devils kept the lead as Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) and Sam Lorenzo (Sterling, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) hit triples, and Wright hit from long range for a 31-20 advantage, late in the half.

Melton followed up his own miss and hit a three-pointer to close out the half with Dickinson up, 36-26.

The Red Devils forced 19 turnovers in the first half while five different players hit a three-pointer. Melton led the way with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists before the break.

The second half started with a flurry of scoring while the Red Devils still held a double-digit lead at the midpoint. Back-to-back scores from Wright and Melton put Dickinson in front, 49-37, with just over 12 minutes to play.

Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) finished a beautiful assist from Allen and then took a charge as the Devils led, 53-40.

The Captains looked to make a late run as Aaron McFarland made a pair of steals, hitting a three-pointer and lay-up to cut the deficit to 55-49. Allen countered with a three-point play at the 3:40 mark.

The Red Devils continued to move the ball well on the offensive end, pulling away for the final of 64-54.

The Captains suffer their first loss of the season, slipping to 3-1.
