(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team had a tough start to the 2019-20 season, hosting York College in the season opener on Tuesday night. The Spartans used a strong second half to open with a 90-63 win.
The Red Devils played even with the Spartans over the course of the first half before the visitors pulled in front by eight at the end of the period. They stretched the lead to 14 in the opening minutes of the second and would extend the margin to 20 at the midpoint of the half.
First-year Dan Conlan (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) hit a three-pointer to put Dickinson up early, 12-8, and sophomore Onye Okoro (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) gave the Red Devils a 17-13 advantage with 10:42 remaining in the first half.
York built the lead to seven before some strong play from Jack Tierney (Darien, Conn./Darien) and a lay-up from first-year Travis Dobbins (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) pulled Dickinson back to within one.
Jared Wagner closed out the half with a three-pointer to put York in front, 35-27, at the break.
The Red Devils had sparks in the second half, but the Spartans controlled play for most of the period, shooting just under 68 percent from the field.
Wagner led the Spartans with a game-high 18 points, adding six rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Chris Bates (Ellicott City, Md./Boy's Latin) had a strong game inside, leading the Red Devils with 12 points behind 5-of-8 shooting on the night. Tierney reached double figures with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, adding a pair of blocked shots.
