(Montclair, N.J.) – The #10-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had a big third quarter to gain some breathing room on the way to a 16-10 win at Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) had another strong performance, netting five goals on the afternoon while Joel Mayo (Glen Ellyn, Md./Berkshire) tallied three goals and two assists and senior Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) added two goals and two assists to reach the century mark wtih 100 career points.
Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) tallied six ground balls and forced a pair of turnovers in the midfield.
The Red Devils took a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter with O'Connell netting a pair while the Red Hawks capitalized on a penalty for their second tally of the game.
Montclair took advantage of a pair of penalties to start the second period and the Red Hawks tacked on two more to pull in front 6-4, with 7:33 remaining in the half.
Matt Donnelly (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) answered to stop the run with Mayo and Usich scoring back-to-back in a 12-second span as the long pole found the net right off the face-off to put Dickinson back in front at the break, 7-6.
The Red Devils struck almost immediately to open the second half, O'Connell finished a feed from John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) just 10 seconds into the third quarter. O'Connell added an extra-man goal with an assist from Mayo and then returned the favor, feeding Mayo for a 10-6 lead.
Montclair broke up the run, but Phillips would sandwich a pair of goals around a tally from Max Menkes (Potomac, Md./Bullis) to make the score 13-7 at the end of the third.
Nick Goles (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) added an assist at the end of the third and scored twice in the fourth. O'Connell tacked on a late one as well with a dish from Phillips for the final of 16-10.
Goles finished with nine ground balls on the day. Junior Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 11 saves to earn the win in the nets. Michael Marinelli (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) came on to add a save in the final 4:19.
The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They return home to face Elizabethtown College on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.
