(Owing Mills, Md.) – The #8-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had a tough outing on Saturday, falling to Middlebury College, 16-11, on day two of the Green Turtle Classic, hosted by Stevenson University.
Dickinson needed a wake-up call as Middlebury put four goals on the board before Max Menkes (Potomac, Md./Bullis) found the back of the net off an assist from first-year Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) to get the Red Devils rolling.
Senior Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) scored off a feed from Ryan Schaffer (West Caldwell, N.J./Caldwell) to make the score 4-2 at the end of the first and first-year Tucker Booth (Timonium, Md./Boy's Latin) cut the deficit to 4-3 in the opening seconds of the second, finishing an assist from O'Connell.
Middlebury countered with a pair of goals in a span of just a minute to stretch the margin to 6-3 with 12 minutes to play in the half before Phillips capitalized with a man-up goal off an assist from Alex Hosker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) to go into halftime at 6-4.
The Panthers opened the second half with three straight goals for a 9-4 advantage. Menkes tallied a goal and an assist as the Red Devils countered with three straight to cut the lead back to two.
Middlebury tacked on a pair to end the third, leading 11-7. Phillips found O'Connell and then took the ensuing face-off and ripped a laser into the top right corner to cut the margin to 11-9.
O'Connell followed up with a long-range strike to make it a one-goal game with 11:38 remaining in regulation.
The Panthers regrouped and went on a 3-0 run behind back-to-back goals from Tyler Forbes to go in front, 14-10.
Phillips fed O'Connell for the third time in the quarter before Middlebury added a pair of late goals for the final of 16-11.
O'Connell had another big day with five goals and one assist while Phillips tallied five assists to go with a pair of goals. Menkes continued his strong run of play as well, netting two goals and handing out an assist.
Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won eight face-offs and controlled six ground balls. Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) tallied seven ground balls and won three face-offs while Zach Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) went 2-for-2 on the day.
Junior goaltender Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) made 17 saves in the nets. Spencer Hoey (Macungie, Pa./The Hill School) forced a pair of turnovers and controlled three GBs. Bobby Barroll (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) had three GBs and a caused turnover.
The Red Devils slip to 5-2 on the season. They return to action next Saturday, hosting Washington College at 12:00 pm.
