(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #14-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day in style, pulling away late to post a 19-4 win over Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster) tallied seven goals and three assists to lead the Red Devil attack while long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) was a force on both ends of the field, forcing five turnovers and controlling four ground balls to go with a pair of assists.
Junior goaltender Cole Pellicano (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) worked his way into the scoring column with an assist as well, lining a beautiful clearing pass to put Nick Goles (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) ahead of the pack for his second goal of the afternoon.
The Red Devils traded goals with the Garnet to start the game before netting three straight to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. O'Connell scored once and tallied a pair of assists while Usich and fellow long-pole Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School) dished out assists as well.
Swarthmore cut the deficit to 4-2 early in the second before O'Connell finished a pair of assists from senior John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) to give Dickinson a 6-2 advantage at halftime.
The Red Devils came out of the break firing, netting six goals in the third quarter to take a 12-3 lead into the fourth. O'Connell continued to be the spark, putting in three goals and adding an assist in the third-quarter run.
Dickinson continued to roll in the fourth, opening the quarter with a goal from senior Deegan Beauchemin (Monroe, Conn./Newtown) on the second assist of the day for Usich.
Seven different players found the net in the fourth as the Red Devils improved to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference.
Lockwood tallied a goal and two assists to go with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Doran caused three turnovers and long pole Declan Wasp (Port Washington, N.Y./Chaminade) forced three as well.
Senior Bobby Hartwick (Brookeville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won 12-of-19 face-offs and controlled six ground balls. He added an assist as well, feeding O'Connell in the third quarter. Austin Hurdle (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) won 4-of-7 face-offs on the day.
Pellicano made 14 saves to go with his assist. Senior Michael Marinelli (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) came on to add two saves and not allow a goal to close out the game.
The Red Devils travel to Muhlenberg College next Saturday for a 4:00 pm face-off with the Mules.
