(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team had a great start to the 2019 Centennial Conference Softball Championship, posting a 9-1 win in six innings over visiting Ursinus College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Devils came alive in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to take an early lead.
Junior Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) led-off the inning with a single and moved to second on sacrifice bunt from Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens). Sophomore Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) doubled to score Parise and put the Red Devils on the board.
Classmate Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) followed up with a single and they both came around to score as Hannah Seburn (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) hit a single down the line in right field.
Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./Penn Charter) singled in the fifth and came around to score on a hard shot down the line from Siecinski.
That would trigger a four-run inning for the Red Devils as McConney singled and Acocella walked to set the stage for a two-RBI singled from Hannah Brenner (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Seburn came through with another RBI single to bring in Acocella.
Faith Carson come on for Ursinus and had a pinch-hit single and Heather Lazer returned to run, scoring on a double from catcher Ally St. Jean to spoil the shutout and make the score 7-1.
The Red Devils would counter with two runs in the bottom of the inning to end the game with the eight-run rule, 9-1.
Gutpelet walked and stole second before Parise walked to put runners on first and second. Siecinski hit a into an error that brought Gutpelet around from second. McConney followed up with a shot into the gap in right center and that would do it as Parise came across with the game-winner.
McConney went 3-for-3 on the day, driving in two runs and scoring twice as well. Seburn finished 2-for-3 on the day, driving in three runs and Brenner added a pair of RBI as well.
Senior Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) went the distance in the circle, improving to 13-5 on the season. She held the Bears to just five hits, one run, one walk while recording five strikeouts to raise her career mark to 422.
The Red Devils improve to 22-15 overall. They travel to Haverford College on Friday for the second round of the tournament. The first game will be between Swarthmore and Ursinus with the Red Devils facing host Haverford in the second game of the day.
The tournament continues on Saturday with the first game scheduled for 11:00 am.
