Red Devils Pull Away in Opener 63-49

(Huntingdon, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team opened the season with a 63-49 win at Juniata College, led by a pair of first-years, including a double-double from Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The first quarter was back-and-forth with the Red Devils pulling in front, 15-11, at the end of the period. Junior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) started the second with a three-pointer and Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) stretched the lead to 20-11.

The Eagles rallied to close the gap but Kremp answered with some free throws to keep the Red Devils in front, 25-24, at halftime.

Juniata went on a 6-0 run to start the second half before Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) scored and Kremp buried a three-pointer to tie the game.

Deutsch scored inside with Kremp and Heiring hitting three-pointers and Katie Weaver (Malvern, Pa./Episcopal Academy) added a late bucket to give Dickinson a 40-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Padalino sank another three-pointer to start the fourth quarter and Deutsch finished a three-point play to stretch the lead to double-figures with 6:04 to remaining. Sophomore Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) tacked on a big three-pointer for a 13-point advantage.

The Red Devils were solid at the line in the final minutes, hitting six straight to secure the win. Deutsch led all scorers with her game-high 17 while Kremp finished with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists, going 5-for-6 from the stripe.

Maira and Heiring each finished with nine points. Heiring came away with six steals, blocking two shots and handing out two assists. Maira added three steals and three rebounds on the night.

Weaver tallied five steals to go with her four points and six rebounds.

The Red Devils combined to go 11-for-13 from the free throw line and came away with 17 steals.

The Red Devils are on the road this weekend, traveling to the SpringHill Suites Invitational at Washington & Jefferson. Dickinson will square-off with the host Presidents at 8:00 pm on Friday night.
