Strong Finish Leads Presidents Past Red Devils

(Washington, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team suffered a 77 -58 setback to host Washington & Jefferson in the first round of the SpringHill Suites Invitational on Friday night.

The Presidents jumped out to a 4-0 start and led 7-3 but the Red Devils would overtake the hosts at the end of the first period, leading 20-15.

Briana Breski (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Kate Deutsch (Marlton, N.J./Camden Catholic) each scored seven points to lead the way while Deutsch added four rebounds as well.

Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) went 6-for-6 from the line while the Red Devils started 11-for-12 from the stripe as a team.

W&J rallied to pull in front 31-30 at the half, taking the lead on a last second three-pointer from Danielle Parker.

Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) knocked down a pair of field-goals while Deutsch added four points to lead the Devils with 11 at the break.

Deutsch put the Devils up early in the third quarter, but the Presidents would make a run to close out period with a 51-41 advantage.

Lauren Gilbert and Hannah Johnston sank three-pointers as the hosts extended the lead to 65-46. The Presidents used the momentum to build on the lead, despite a solid effort from the Red Devils.

Deutsch finished with her second straight double-double, scoring 17 points and controlling 10 rebounds, adding a pair of assists and two steals.

Maeda tallied eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Jennifer Kremp (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) had eight points behind a pair of three-pointers to go with four steals.

Breski and Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) each scored seven points while Padalino finished with six points and four rebounds.

The Red Devils slip to 1-1 on the season. They will face Salem College in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
