Washington Holds Off Late Run to Claim CC Opener

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team made a late run at Washington College in the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, but the Shorewomen would hold on to escape with a 12-10 victory.

The Red Devils struck first as Eleanor Kaestner (Glyndon, Md./Franklin) finished an assist from Anne Dunster (Cos Cobb, Conn./Greenwich) for an early lead.

Washington countered with a run to take a 4-1 lead at the 15-minute mark. Kaestner finished another nice feed from Dunster to break up the run before Washington capitalized on a late free position to take a 5-2 lead at halftime.

Lauren Brenner scored back-to-back goals for Washington to start the second half. They opened with a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 9-2, with just under 26 minutes remaining.

Sam Marmo (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) took advantage of a free position opportunity and sophomore Mack Maurer (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) made a strong dodge to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Kristy Grovum score back-to-back for Washington before the Red Devils went on a 7-1 run to close out the game. Marmo added another free position goal and Dunster tallied two straight to pull Dickinson within four at 11-7.

Grovum slipped in a free position before the Devils scored three more for the final of 12-10. Maurer scored off a feed from Greta Holt (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) and Marmo found Erika Bloes (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) for a spectacular finish at the two-minute mark.

Maddie Parker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) added the final goal with just over a minute to play.

Dunster led the attack with two goals and two assists while Marmo went 2-1 on the day. Maurer netted a pair of goals, adding three ground balls and three draw controls. Holt pulled in four draws on the afternoon.

Sophomore Avery Priest (San Rafael, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) got the start in the nets and finished with four saves.

The Red Devils slip to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Bryn Mawr Colleg next Saturday for a 1:00 pm start.
