(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson volleyball team put on a thrilling exhibition on homecoming but dropped a heartbreaker to Muhlenberg, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
The teams opened with a marathon first set, battling to a 35-33 decision with Muhlenberg coming out on top. The Red Devils sandwiched a pair of 25-21 wins around a 25-17 set for the Mules to send the match to a deciding fifth game.
Dickinson put together a nice run in the second set to pull in front 18-7. The Mules rallied to cut the deficit to one point before the Devils pulled away to even the match.
Muhlenberg strung together points in the third to build an early lead and had a strong finish to pull back in front 2-1. The Red Devils weren't quite done though, overtaking the Mules in the middle of the set and closed out the fourth with a nice kill from sophomore libero Tatiana Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertorriqueno de Ninas).
The Mules took a 4-1 lead in the fifth but couldn't pull away as the Devils erased a four-point gap to pull within one at 12-11. Muhlenberg scored three straight to take the match and improve to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Kristin Allgaier (Reston, Va./South Lakes) tallied 53 assists, placing her eighth on the program single-match list. Four Red Devils reached double-figures in kills during the marathon match. First-year Morgan Biggs (Stevenson, Va./James Wood) led the way with 18, adding a pair of blocks.
Allgaier tallied 10 digs and Christina Chu (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) reached double-figures with 15, adding three aces as well.
The Red Devils slip to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. They travel to Ursinus College on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm match with the Bears.
