(Carlisle, Pa.) - The Dickinson
College women's basketball team turned in an outstanding effort on
Sunday to win the 2009 Days Inn Tip-off Tournament. The Red Devils
overcame a slow start to top #15-ranked Moravian College
67-65. |
The Greyhounds stormed out to a quick 9-0 lead in the opening
five minutes before the Devils rallied to tie the game, 12-12, at
the 9:14 mark.
The teams traded leads with Moravian pulling in front by eight
late in the first half. The Red Devils battled back to cut the
deficit to 30-27 at halftime.
Dickinson came out fired up, and opened the second half with an
8-1 run to take a 37-31 lead with 16 minutes remaining in the game.
The Devils never trailed from that point, but were tied 51-51 with
8:07 on the clock.
The Devils managed to stretch the margin to five before a Hilary
Murray three-pointer pulled Moravian within two at the 2:00 mark.
Jessica Foran capitalized on a steal by Murray to knot the game,
63-63.
Following a Devil turnover, junior Carole Dempsey
(Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) made a steal
and Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great
Valley) scored off a Brooke Muller
(Northampton, Pa./Whitehall) assist to put Dickinson
in front, 65-63.
Dempsey controlled the rebound on a Moravian miss and the
Greyhounds fouled Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly,
N.J./Tenafly) with 21 seconds to play. Finnerty hit
1-of-2 free throws to stretch the margin to 66-63.
Foran answered once again with a lay-up and the Greyhounds
fouled Muller with just four seconds on the clock. She also hit
1-of-2 to make the final score 67-65.
Sisco led the way with a double-double, scoring 16 points and
controlling 10 rebounds. She went 4-for-4 from the line and tallied
four steals.
Five Devils reached double-figures on the afternoon.
First-yearBelma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar
Cliff) added 11 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the
field. Finnerty tallied 11 points while Dempsey and Walsh each
finished with 10. Dempsey also made five steals in the game.
Kate Harrison led Moravian(3-1) with 12 points, eight rebounds,
three blocked shots and a pair of steals.
The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They travel to
Swarthmore College for the Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday.
Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm.
