(Baltimore, Md.) - The
Dickinson College women's basketball team held on to win a battle
in Baltimore, topping host Johns Hopkins, 51-49 on Saturday
afternoon. |
Senior guard Brooke Muller (Northampton,
Pa./Whitehall)opened the game with a three-pointer. The
Blue Jays answered and pulled in front for an early 10-5 lead.
Hopkins held the lead for most of the first half, but could not
pull away. The Devils made run at the end of the half to take a
30-27 advantage at the break.
The Red Devils stretched the margin to ten to open the second
half, pulling in front, 37-27 at the 17:50 mark. The Blue Jays cut
the deficit to five and remained within striking distance
throughout the half.
Dickinson led 49-42 after a pair of Dana Walsh
(Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) free throws with 3:07
remaining in regulation. The Blue Jays trailed by just three points
at the 1:31 mark. A pair of Carole Dempsey (Potomac,
Md./Winston Churchill) free throws put the Devils up
51-46 with just over a minute to play in the game.
Chantel Matiolla (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) hit a
three-pointer with 46 second on the clock. The Devils missed a shot
but Dempsey controlled the rebound and the Devils held on for the
win.
Dempsey scored a game-high 18 points, adding four rebounds and a
pair of steals. Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair
Academy) added 14 points, four rebounds, three
assists and three steals while
Muller finished with seven points, eight rebounds and five
assists.
Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led Hopkins
(7-7, 5-5) with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two
steals.
The Red Devils improve to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the Centennial
Conference. They return home to host Franklin & Marshall at
6:00 pm on Wednesday.
