Garnet Holds On, Tops Devils 73-68

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team turned in a strong performance, but suffered a 73-68 setback to visiting Swarthmore on Saturday.

 

Dickinson jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Garnet answered with a 7-2 run and kept it close throughout the first half. The teams played to six ties in the opening half with the Red Devils taking a 34-30 advantage into halftime.

 

Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) knocked-down a three-pointer to open the second half and Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) scored to put the Devils up, 39-30.

 

Swarthmore rallied and pulled even with the Devils, 43-43, with 14:04 on the clock. The Garnet took the lead, 48-47 at the 10:29 mark, and held the lead for the remainder of the contest.

 

They stretched the lead to seven with just under five minutes to play, but the Devils rallied to cut the deficit to 65-63 with 1:19 to play. Swarthmore would hold on, converting 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch.

 

Junior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) led the Devils with a game-high 16 points, hitting 8-of-9 free throws and controlling four rebounds. Classmate Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) tallied 15 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals.

 

Finnerty and Borgese each finished with nine points on the afternoon, combining for 13 rebounds as well. Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) added eight points, five assists and three steals.

 

Five players reached double-figures for Swarthmore (5-8, 3-6). Katie Lytle led the way with a double-double, scoring 13 points and controlling a game-high 11 rebounds. Kayla Moritzky and Madeline Ross each added 13 points as well.

 

The Red Devils fall to 2-12 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday for a 6:00 tip-off with the Diplomats.
