(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team turned in a solid performance, despite a roster plagued with injuries, falling at Johns Hopkins, 56-44, on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to injuries the Devils also lost junior guard Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly), who left to study abroad for the spring semester. The Red Devils played well in the early going, jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes.
Hopkins rallied with a big run, pulling in front, 14-5, with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Blue Jays stretched the margin to 25-13 with a little over four minutes to play. The Devils battled back to close out the half, trailing 33-25 at the break.
The Devils cut the deficit to four, 35-31, on a pair of Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) free throws at the 17:40 mark. Hopkins would stretch the lead again, taking a 43-35 advantage at the midway point of the second half.
The Blue Jays pulled in front by 10 and would hold that lead for the better part of the final seven minutes of the game. Three players reached double-figures to lead Hopkins (14-2, 9-2 CC), led by Maggie Fruehan with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) led the Red Devils with a game-high 18 points, adding eight rebounds, a pair of assists and two steals. Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
Walsh finished with nine points and 11 rebounds while dishing out five assists on the afternoon. Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) chipped in with five points and a pair of steals.
The Red Devils slip to 2-15 overall and 2-10 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils return home to host Gettysburg College on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
