Strong Defensive Effort Falls Short as Bullets Top Devils

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team turned in another strong showing, but suffered a 54-42 setback to visiting Gettysburg College on Wednesday night.

 

The Red Devils played solid defense, keeping the game within three points for the opening 10 minutes of the first half. The Bullets went on an 11-0 run to pull in front, 20-9, at the 8:25 mark. First-year Kellie Nissen (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) came off the bench and knocked-down a three-pointer to end the drought.

 

The teams traded baskets down the stretch with the Bullets taking a seven-point lead into halftime. Alyssa Isler and Alyssa Oursler each scored 12 points in the first half to give Gettysburg a 30-23 advantage.

 

Isler hit a three-pointer early in the second half to put the Bullets up, 35-27. The Devils went on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to just a field-goal, 37-35, with 11:53 to play in the game. Dickinson trailed by just four with a little over eight minutes remaining, trailing 42-38.

 

The Bullets closed out the final eight minutes with a 12-4 run to secure the win as Gettysburg improved to 10-8 overall and 8-5 in the Centennial Conference.

 

Oursler finished with a game-high 22 points, adding eight rebounds and three steals to lead Gettysburg. Isler added 18 points, hitting 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.

 

Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) led a balanced Dickinson attack with nine points and seven rebounds, adding a pair of assists and two steals. Classmate Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) tallied eight points and five rebounds, hitting 3-of-5 shots from the floor.

 

Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) chipped in with seven points while first-year Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) went 4-for-5 from the free throw line, scoring six points and controlling five boards. Senior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) scored five points and dished out four assists.

 

The Red Devils slip to 2-16 on the year and 2-11 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Ursinus College at 2:00 pm.
