(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team advanced to the final of the 2012 Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament with a 79-61 win over Shenandoah University on Saturday night. The Devils will face Lynchburg College, who advanced with a 92-29 win over Penn State Berks.
The Red Devils went on a late run and led, 38-26, at halftime behind 10 first-half points from senior Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff).
Dickinson held a double-digit lead for the entire second half, stretching the margin to as many as 22 in the final minutes.
Mekic finished with a game-high 18 points, hitting 8-of-10 shots to go with three assists and four steals. Five Red Devils reached double-figures on the night. Senior Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) scored 14 points, hitting 4-of-6 shots and 5-of-6 free throws, adding two assists and a pair of steals.
Senior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) added 13 points and controlled eight rebounds while handing out four assists. She went 5-for-7 from the stripe. Classmate Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) scored 12 points and dished out three assists while sophomore Carmen Mann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tallied 10 points, three blocked shots and four rebounds, hitting 4-of-6 shots from the field. Ashley Kinney (Somers, Conn./Somers) handed out a game-high five assists.
The Red Devils hit 18-of-23 free throws and combined for 21 assists as they improve to 2-0 on the season.
Holly Chittenden led Shenandoah with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Hornets slip to 1-1.
Shenandoah will face Penn State-Berks at 2:00 pm, followed by the championship game between Lynchburg and Dickinson at 4:00 pm.
