Late Run Leads Garnet Past Devils in Centennial Opener

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team led for most of the game, but Swarthmore rallied in the end to win both teams' Centennial Conference opener, 70-63, on Tuesday night.

The Garnet jumped out to a 4-0 lead which would prove to be the largest advantage for either team in the first half. The game saw seven ties in the opening 20 minutes with the Dickinson holding a 33-31 advantage at halftime.

Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) led the Devils with 12 points in the first half while Elle Larsen tallied 10 for the Garnet.

Borgese struck first in the second half and classmate Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff) made a steal and hit a pair of free throws to give Dickinson its biggest lead, 37-31, at the 18 minute mark. The Devils held a five point advantage with just over 15 minutes to play before the Garnet went on an 8-2 run to take the lead at the 12:35 mark.

Swarthmore stretched the run to 11-4, taking a five-point lead of their own, with 8:49 remaining in the game. Sophomore Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) hit a three-pointer and first-year Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) hit a free throw to pull the Devils back within a point.

Kayle Moritzky drained a three-pointer to trigger another Swarthmore run that would put them in front, 63-55 with just over two minutes to play. Sisco buried a three-pointer from the corner to keep the Devils in it. Borgese hit a jumper and a three-pointer around a pair of Garnet free throws, but Swarthmore would convert 4-of-6 foul shots down the stretch to secure the win.

Madeline Ross led Swarthmore with 20 points and seven rebounds while Larsen finished with 16 points as the Garnet improved to 3-0 and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.

Borgese led the Devils with a game-high 20 points, adding nine rebounds and a pair of assists. Mekic recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, adding a pair of assists and two steals. She hit 5-of-8 shots from the floor and was 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
