'Fords Hold Off Red Devils to Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team kept coming back on host Haverford College, but could not catch the 'Fords, falling 72-65, on Saturday afternoon. The 'Fords remain unbeaten early in conference play, improving to 4-0.

 

The 'Fords jumped out to an early lead, holding an, 11-2 advantage, just five minutes into the game. The Red Devils battled back, pulling within three on a pair of Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff) free throws at the 10:54 mark, making the score, 18-15.

 

Haverford opened the lead to double-figures, stretching the margin to 14 on a Jacquelyne Pizzuto three-pointer, late in the half. Mekic knocked-down a jumper with four seconds to play, to make the deficit, 37-25, at the break.

 

Haverford drained a three-pointer to open the second half, but Dickinson slowly started to claw its way back into the game. Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) hit a three-pointer to trigger a 7-1 run to cut the lead to six, 44-38.

 

The 'Fords answered to take a 49-38 lead with 9:59 remaining in the game but the Devils would respond again as well, pulling within six at the 8:43 mark.

 

The lead would fluctuate between an 11 and six-point advantage for the majority of the half. The 'Fords made it a dozen on Dominique Meeks jumper with 6:17 on the clock. Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) later pulled Dickinson within seven, hitting a pair of free throws with 4:55 left to play.

 

The Red Devils kept battling down the stretch. Borgese hit a jump-shot from the foul line to make the score, 63-55, with 1:12 remaining. The Devils were forced to foul in what had proved to be an already physical game.

 

Rachel Baskin hit both free throws and then came up with a big steal on the other end, calling timeout just before going out of bounds. Another foul led to a pair of makes for Pizzuto to put Haverford up, 67-55, with 52 seconds to play.

 

Phillips drained a three-pointer to keep the Devils' hopes alive with 42 seconds on the clock. Haverford would hold on, converting 5-of-6 free throws in the final seconds. Mekic buried a three-pointer from the corner for the final of 72-65.

 

Mekic's triple gave her a game-high 19 points on the day, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Borgese added 19 points as well, to go with five rebounds, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the floor.

 

Phillips knocked-down four three-pointers to finish with 13 points, adding five rebounds while senior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds.

 

Meeks led Haverford with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as they improve to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference.

 

The Red Devils slip to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play. They travel to Johns Hopkins on Tuesday for a 7:00 pm tip-off with the Blue Jays.
