Red Devils Rally Past Blue Jays for Key Conference Road Win

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team rallied past Johns Hopkins in the second half for a key, 56-51, Centennial Conference win, on Tuesday night. The Red Devils erased a 12-point deficit to overtake the Blue Jays to improve to 6-2 on the season.

 

The Blue Jays jumped out to an early, 8-3, lead but the Devils answered, tying the game, 13-13, with 11:06 to play in the first half. Hopkins started to build another lead as the half came to a close, taking a 28-22 advantage into the break.

 

The Red Devils came out of intermission, on a mission, quickly scoring three straight baskets to pull even once again, 28-28, just two minutes into the second half. Hopkins used a 10-0 run to open its biggest lead of the night, 44-32, with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

 

Four different players scored to pull Dickinson within four, 44-40, with 7:36 on the clock. The Red Devils continued to rally, putting together a 16-2 run of their own to take just their second lead of the game at the 4:58 mark. First-year Rachel Sisco (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) knocked-down a three-pointer to give Dickinson a 48-46 edge.

 

The Red Devils locked things down on the defensive end, holding the host Blue Jays to just three points in the final 4:25 of the game. Hopkins tied the game, 50-50, and added a free throw, but a lay-up from senior Belma Mekic (Sarajevo, Bosnia/Cedar Cliff) and two strong baskets by classmate Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) secured the win for the Devils.

 

Sophomore Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) led the Devils in scoring with 14 points, hitting 4-of-4 free throws. Senior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists in another strong performance.

 

Walsh had a solid night as well, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Mekic tallied seven points, four rebounds and made three steals on the night.

 

Stacy Fairy led Hopkins (2-6, 1-4) with a game-high 15 points while Liz Tommasi added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

 

The Red Devils improve to 6-2 overall and pull even in the conference at 2-2. They return home to face Ursinus College on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
