(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team outscored host Gettysburg, 32-28, in the second half but couldn't overcome a first-half deficit, falling 68-56 on Wednesday night.
The Devils played well in the early minutes of the first half, tying the game 10-10, on a jumper from first-year Alexis Friedlander (Bethesda, Md./Maret School) at the 12:55 mark.
The Bullets went on a 14-4 run to pull in front, 26-14, with 6:38 remaining in the first half. Friedlander hit 3-of-4 free throws to cut the lead to five, 26-21, with 4:15 to play in the half.
Gettysburg answered with a 14-3 run to close out the half with a 40-24 lead.
First-year Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) knocked down a three-pointer to open the second half but the Bullets held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
The Red Devils continued to battle down the stretch, cutting the lead to 12 in the final minutes.
Junior Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) led the Red Devils with 13 points, hitting 9-of-12 free throws and handing out a pair of assists. Phillips hit a pair of three-pointers, scoring 12 points to go with four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Junior Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) controlled a game-high nine rebounds, adding seven points and a pair of steals. Classmate Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) grabbed nine rebounds as well, scoring six points while recording three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots. First-year Kellie Nissen (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) chipped in with five points and three assists.
Alyssa Ousler led Gettysburg (12-12, 9-9) with a game-high 16 points. She added six rebounds, two assists, three steals and four blocked shots. Caroline Murphy added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 3-21 overall and 3-16 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Franklin & Marshall in the regular season finale on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
