(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College women's basketball team gave visiting Muhlenberg all it could handle in the early going on Tuesday night. The Mules would regroup for a strong showing in the second half to post a 76-42 win.
The Mules started with a 10-3 run in the opening five minutes but the Red Devils answered with a 10-2 run of their own to take a 13-12 lead with 10:20 remaining in the first half. The Devils continued to push the ball up the floor, pulling in front, 19-13, just two minutes later.
Muhlenberg closed out the half with five three-pointers in the last 6:47, erasing the deficit and stretching their own lead to 11 on a three-pointer from Hannah Rush. First-year Sarah Phillips (West Amwell, N.J./South Hunterdon) scored off a Bridget Borgese (Swarthmore, Pa./Notre Dame de Namur) assist to close out the half with the Mules holding a 34-25 advantage.
Phillips knocked-down a three-pointer to pull the Devils within six, early in the second half. The Mules would gain momentum, however, and quickly take control of the game. Back-to-back three-pointers from Kate Clawson and Alita Zabrecky triggered a run that stretched a six point lead to 55-35, midway through the second half.
Muhlenberg continued to build the lead over the course of the second half despite strong play and a solid effort from the Red Devils. The Mules hit seven three-pointers in the first half and finished with 10 on the night.
Zabrecky was just shy of a double-double, scoring 20 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Alexandra Chili added 15 points as Muhlenberg improved to 16-5 overall and 11-5 in the Centennial Conference.
Junior Dana Walsh (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) turned in an outstanding performance, recording a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Borgese was hustling all over the floor, finishing with seven points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Phillips tallied eight points and four rebounds. Belma Mekic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and Liz Schultz (Dunmore, Pa./Scranton Prep) each scored six points while Alexis Friedlander (Bethesda, Md./Maret School) added five.
The Red Devils slip to 2-20 overall and 2-15 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Bryn Mawr College for a 1:00 pm tip-off on Saturday.
